How it All Began
In 1996 a group of faithful Orthodox Christians in the Boston area met informally about the possibility of starting an Orthodox school. A committee was formed which investigated what interest existed, and it was decided that the best way of beginning an Orthodox school would be at the preschool level and to then expand to a full elementary school. The committee, with great effort and the help of the Holy Spirit, then proceeded to lease a site, hire qualified Orthodox teachers, recruit students, and secure the required state and local licensing.
In
September 1997, Theophany School, an inter-Orthodox Christian school,
officially opened its doors with two class levels, a Preschool class
for three year olds and a Kindergarten I class for four year olds.
Seventeen children were enrolled in the two classes for the 1997-1998
school year.
After
its first year of operation, the School planned to add a kindergarten,
and with six students enrolled, it seemed that with just a few more
students the kindergarten would be a reality. However, the School had
difficulty attracting more students because of parents' concern that
there would not be a first and subsequent grades. It is generally the
case in the Boston area at independent and parochial schools that in
order to secure a child's enrollment in a school, it is necessary to
enroll the child at that institution early at the lower grades.
Thus,
the School needed to revise its original plan. The School has spent the
past eight years building confidence in the minds of parents and the
community that the School is a thoughtful and reputable educational
institution. It is for this reason that the School has remained a
preschool, to give it time to expand its reputation of quality as an
educational institution.
